What are clapsticks?

A Clapstick is a single stick-shaped instrument. They are normally used in pairs - when it becomes known as clapsticks or clappers - to create a sharp and distinct percussive sound.

As an Australian Aboriginal ancestral instrument that traditionally accompanies the didgeridoo during a ceremony (known as corroboree), it is sometimes referred to as “music stick” or just “stick”. In the language of the Yolngu Aborigines of Northeast Arnhem Land, Australia, these clapsticks are called “bimli”.

How to successfully play the clapsticks

To play, cradle one stick loosely between the palm and fingers creating an echo chamber out of your hand. Then strike it with the other stick to create the "clap" sound used to keep a rhythm going.

Do you have any clapsticks?

Yes. They are on display on our clapsticks page [link for Australians].

Boomerang Safety

We recommend that you do not attempt to catch the boomerang. If you must try, catch it flat between your palms, making sure it is below neck height.

Our returning boomerangs [link for Australians] are not children’s toys and should be thrown only by youths and adults. Our killer boomerangs [link for Australians] are not crafted to return. Some of these have already made their way to Afghanistan via Australian soldiers and security personnel. These have been purchased solely as souvenirs and playthings.
